Job description

Key responsibilities

  • Teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels in the BA, MA and ResMa programmes in History as well as the BA and MA programmes in Classics and Ancient Near Eastern Studies; supervision of BA and MA theses, in both English and Dutch; staffs members specializing in Ancient History may be asked to teach (first-year) courses in the field of Medieval History;
  • Original research and regular dissemination of the results through appropriate academic channels;
  • Participate in the research programme The Unification of the Mediterranean World (UMC) of the Institute for History;
  • Administrative duties commensurate with career stage at the Institute for History and/or at the various study programmes that include courses in Ancient History;
  • Acquisition of research-funding from NWO, ERC and other sources;
  • Representation of the field to external audiences and in public media.

Requirements

Selection Criteria

  • You have a good academic teaching record commensurate with career stage (evidenced by evaluations); you are committed to high-quality teaching practice, and have wide thematic teaching scope.
  • You have a PhD degree in Ancient History;
    You have specialist knowledge of Greek or Roman history matching at least one of the themes covered by the research profile of the department of Ancient History (The Unification of the Mediterranean World)). The department particularly welcomes applications by candidates specializing in cultural history, religious history or the history of mentality;
  • You have a research and publication record that is commensurate with career stage;
  • You have earning capacity when it comes to external funding.
  • You are willing to develop initiatives in teaching and research;
  • You are willing to undertake administrative responsibilities commensurate with career stage, at Institute and Faculty level;
  • You have affinity with and capacity for teamwork and collegiality in an intercultural work environment;
  • You have an excellent command of English and a good command of Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch, you are expected to acquire a good command of Dutch (B1 level) within two years of the appointment. The Institute for History will make resources available to this end.

Terms and conditions

The appointment (0,8 fte) is in temporary employment for 18 months (1 August, 2023 to January 31st, 2025), with the prospect of a permanent position after positive evaluation. The position corresponds to the position of University Lecturer in the University system of job profiles (UFO). The salary is in accordance with the collective salary agreement of the Association of Dutch Universities (CAO) and depending on qualifications and experience. The gross monthly salary is € 3557 (scale 10-4) to € 6181 (scale 12) for a full working week.

Depending on qualifications, as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly regarding teaching skills certification and the number of years of relevant work experience, the appointee may either start at the appropriate step in scale 10, 11 or 12.
