The Department of History and Art History is looking for a temporary lecturer in the History of International Relations (HIR). Teaching experience is a requirement and international teaching experience an advantage. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching both the Bachelor’s track and the Master’s programmes International Relations (consisting of the Master’s programme International Relations in Historical Perspective and the Master’s programme Conflict Studies and Human Rights) as well as to more general introductory courses within the department. Most of the HIR course work focuses on the second half of the twentieth century up to the present, but the ability to draw longer historical lines is encouraged. Please bear in mind that this position does not include research time.
Teaching and research in the HIR group (chaired by Prof. Dr. Jolle Demmers) is centred around three themes: Conflict and Security; Europe in the World; and Global and Imperial Relations. Applicants are requested to demonstrate how their past performance is relevant to one or several of these themes. At the same time, candidates are expected to teach on a wide range of subjects, including those beyond their own expertise, as well as assuming administrative tasks, and participate in curriculum design, course coordination and thesis supervision.
Utrecht University has a teaching qualification system for university lecturers, and candidates are required to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) within two years if they are not already in possession of one.
Candidates are expected to be proficient in both Dutch and English; non-Dutch candidates will need to master the Dutch language on an academic level within two years.
