For the editorial project The Correspondence of Cristofforo Suriano (1616-1623), the Humanities Cluster is currently recruiting a Student Assistant (0,4 fte for 3 or 6 months) in the field of early modern history.

About this vacancy

As student assistant you will contribute to the creation of a modern, annotated digital edition (with English-language abstracts) of the letters of Christofforo Suriano, the Venetian representative in The Hague.  You will assist the editor in various tasks, including general editorial work and historical research on persons, books, and events mentioned in the letters. You will also be an active participant in the research group.

Requirements

Applicants must currently be doing an (R)Ma in history or a related field. The successful applicant will also have:

  • A BA degree in history, or a related field, with a specialisation in the early modern period
  • Demonstrably excellent research skills
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with archival research and historical databases
  • A background or demonstrable interest in digital techniques
  • Outstanding writing skills in English

Experience with seventeenth-century palaeography and/or a (passive) knowledge of Italian will serve as recommendation.

Appointment

We offer an appointment for 3 or 6 months (depending on the candidate’s availability) for 15,2 hours per week (0,4 fte). The gross monthly salary is € 2511 based on a fulltime appointment. The starting date is 1 september 2022.

The KNAW Humanities Cluster is a collaboration of three KNAW institutes: the Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands, the International Institute of Social History (IISH) and the Meertens Institute. In these institutes, we conduct pioneering and excellent humanities research (history, ethnology, literature, linguistics) using innovative methods in which informatics plays an important role. he business office of the KNAW Humanities Cluster supports these three institutes, as well as the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) and the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation (NIOD), in their operational management. Terms of employment
Depending on education and experience the minimum salary is €2.310,- and the maximum salary is €2.511,- gross per month for a full-time appointment (scale SA cao Nederlandse Universiteiten/KNAW). This is exclusive of 8% vacation allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, travel allowance, internet allowance, home working allowance and pension accrual with ABP. The KNAW offers its staff an excellent package of secondary benefits.
