Professional standards for historians

Professional Standards for Historians is the code of ethics drawn up by the KNHG based on the code of the American Historical Association. This code is intended to establish unwritten and existing standards for historians and can serve as a guideline in education and research. The KNHG will regularly review the existing document and assess whether the standards need to be revised or not.

Recalibration 2025

In June 2025, a new version of Standards for Historians was published, which can be found here.

Version 2023

In 2021-2022, the KNHG conducted research into the ‘unethical reuse’ of historical work by historians and others. This research led to a webinar in the spring of 2022 and two sessions at the Historicidagen (History Days) in Rotterdam. These activities and discussions about unethical reuse highlighted the need for a code of ethics for historians.
