Reflecting on the Russian Invasion of Ukraine after one year

On Thursday 23 February 2023, colleagues and students from the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication come together for the third time to reflect on the ongoing war in Ukraine. We invite you to join us for an online conversation about the role of media reporting on the ongoing conflict.

We will be joined by journalists reporting from the war zone and specialists on the region, among others Illia Ponomarenko, war reporter and defense analyst writing among others for the English language online newspaper The Kyiv Independent, Floris Akkerman, independent Dutch journalist with a special interest for Ukraine and Russia, and Olivier Nyirubugara, Lecturer at ESHCC and specialist on war reporting.

Led by ESHCC experts

The discussion will be led by ESHCC experts Iwona Gusc, cultural historian focussed on the historical relations between Eastern Europe and the West, and Etienne F. Augé, historian specialized in propaganda and public diplomacy.

Together in conversation, our experts will reflect on the war in Ukraine, one year after the Russian invasion of February 2022. We will explore how the conflict and reporting about it have evolved during the last year. We would like to reflect on the role and mission of the media during the war, as well as on the challenges that the war and information fog during a conflict pose to journalism, but also to scholars.

How do you deal with propaganda? How do you distinguish the truth from disinformation? How do you find and verify your sources, how do you report about war? And last but not least, how do you reach the world with your report, knowing that the history of your country is rather not well known to the broader public. Speakers bring their diverse research expertise on history, media, and culture to help us to understand the origins and dynamics of the current conflict.

Members of Erasmus University Rotterdam and members of the public are welcome to join our meeting, taking place via zoom, and to submit their questions for the panelists.
