The Leibniz Institute for European History (IEG) awards scholarships for doctoral students and postdocs from home and abroad. Research projects from the early modern period to contemporary history that deal with the religious, political, social and cultural history of Europe are funded. Comparative, transfer history and transnational projects as well as questions of intellectual and religious history are particularly welcome.
The institute enables its scholarship holders to concentrate on pursuing their own research projects. In an international discussion atmosphere, they hone the methods and questions of interdisciplinary historical European research. Depending on your interests and professional focus, you can participate in the institute’s diverse scientific activities and exchange ideas with its international cooperation partners.
The research projects to be funded should last 6 to 12 months. The scholarships are associated with a residency requirement in Mainz. Shorter trips to archives, libraries, external experts and specialist conferences are possible as part of this residency requirement. The scholarship holders live and work in the institute building in Mainz. They are responsible for their research The institute’s special library and the infrastructure at the Mainz science location are available. Research literature that is not in the inventory can be ordered via a loan service from the Mainz University Library or via interlibrary loan. The scientific working languages of the IEG are German and English. Good knowledge of the English language is a prerequisite.
The next application deadline for postdocs is October 15, 2023. For PhD students the next deadline for application is February 15, 2024
