2020: year of festivities

The coronacrisis has a huge impact on all of us. Consequently, some of our anniversary meetings have unfortunately been cancelled. However, KNHG was and is continually striving to offer creative digital alternatives to celebrate our anniversary. Keep an eye on our website for new announcements!

2020: a year filled with events, gatherings, festivities and other memorable moments.

The Royal Netherlands Historical Society (KNHG) and the BMGN-Low Countries Historical Review celebrate in 2020 their respective 175 and 50th anniversary. This means that the KNHG hosts an activity, gathering or event almost every month which you don’t want to miss.

What is the KNHG organizing?

Competition

We want to look forward with this anniversary. We created a competition about the future of the KNHG/historical science in the Netherlands. We launch the competition at our new year’s reception. The presentation of the winner will be at the annual conference. All members receive the winning entry.

Podcast

We are going to create an addendum for our anniversary book of 1995 in podcast form that looks back on the last 25 years. Past presidents and other board members, former directors of the office, older and younger members will be interviewed for this. Keep an eye on the website and the newsletter for more information about the podcast.

Party

We want to celebrate our anniversary, so we are organizing a summer party at a memorable (historical) location. On the 2th of July at 7 p.m we open our dancefloor. So keep an eye on the website and newsletter for our summer festivities.

Lunch at the KNHG

In 2020 we open our doors three times to exchange thoughts with relations, members and other interested parties. A current event from the broad network of the KNHG will be central to every lunch. Keep an eye on our website and newsletter for information on these lunches.

What is the BMGN organizing?

Paragraph on current events

From new year’s eve onwards the BMGN asks al writers to add a paragraph on current events with every article. The team of the BMGN and the KNHG will =bring attention to the article among the general audience (through the website and social media) but also among the press and the field of education.

Special collection

There will be an anniversary special collection which will contain 10 highlights (content-wise/ methodological renewal) from the BMGN’s 50-year history. The highlights will be chosen by editors and former editors. In an accompanying text, they explain why they chose these articles.

Anniversary edition

We conclude the anniversary year with a special publication for all members – even those who do not have a subscription – and all relations of the KNHG. This will be a thematic publication about “the history of tomorrow” and the anniversary edition contains short additions by historians about new developments -methodological, theoretical or content-wise – in the field of history in the Netherlands and Belgium. A designer will be asked to visualise/present/shape every addition on the website or in a material form.
